Black Expression Through Dance
Timeline:1960s1970s1980s1990s2000s2010s2020s
The Ohio State University has a long commitment to supporting diversity in the Dance Department. Dance originated as part of Physical Education, but Helen Alkire advocated and developed the Dance Department in 1968. Since then, students and teachers of color have been welcome and the department has grown stronger for its sense of inclusiveness and the resultant wide range of aesthetics being taught and supported. As OSU looks to the future, the Dance Department is seen as a place where students and instructors alike can internalize and exemplify the meaning of the University’s motto, “Education for citizenship.”
